The Comptroller & Auditor General of India derives his duties and powers from the Constitution of India and Comptroller and Auditor General's (Duties, Powers and Conditions of services) Act, 1971. His duties include audit of accounts of the Union, States and Union Territories. He is also responsible for compilation and maintaining of accounts of the States.

Office of the Director General of Audit (Central)  is one of the offices of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department functioning under the control of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.

Office of the Director General  of Audit (Central) Chennai  is responsible for the audit of

1.Central Government Establishments located in the states of TN, Kerala and UT of Puducherry and Lakshadweep

2.Accounts of Autonomous Bodies which fall under Section 19(2) & 20(1) of CAG's DPC Act 1971.

3.Any body/authority/institution which is substantially financed by Government of India in the above States and UTs

4.Receipts of Government of India such as Income Tax, GST and Customs Duty in the above states and UTs
