The office of the Principal Accountant General (Audit), Punjab came into existence on 1st March 1984 after restructuring of Indian Audit and Account Department (IA&AD).
It was upgraded as an office of the Principal Accountant General (Audit), Punjab & Union Territory, Chandigarh with effect from August 2002.
The Administrative control of office of the Sr. Deputy Accountant General (Audit) Union Territory, Chandigarh was also entrusted to this office from November 2001. After restructuring of the office in April, 2012 the Administrative control of the Union Territory, Chandigarh has been entrusted to the office of the Principal Director of Audit (Central) Chandigarh.
