R. Ambalavanan is an officer of 1994 batch of Indian Audit & Accounts Service (IAAS). He took over charge as Director General of Audit, Railways, Chennai.
Before taking over charge as DGA, he was serving as Director, Entrepreneurship Development & Innovation Institute, Tamil Nadu. He was holding the position of Chairman and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd., Chennai since December 2022, till July 2024.
Earlier, he served as Principal Accountant General
(Audit -1) Tamilnadu, Chennai from 2nd August 2021 to November 2022. As Pr.AG, he served for Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) in auditing the performance of various departments of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Ambalavanan graduated in Agricultural Science (BSc. Agri) from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Madurai Campus, got Post graduate degree (MSc) in Environmental Studies from Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT), Kochi and attained M.Tech degree in Remote Sensing from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University (AU), Chennai.
He took the Indian Civil Services Examination in 1993 and joined IAAS in 1994. He had his professional training at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts (NAAA) at Shimla during 1995-96.
He also served as the First Secretary in the High Commission of India at London from 2006 to 2008. During this tenure, he was in charge of auditing the Indian Missions in Europe, Russia and CIS countries. He worked as Senior Deputy Accountant General in the office of the Principal Accountant General, Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram till June 2010. Subsequently, he was on deputation as Executive Director of Tea Board, South Zone under Ministry of Commerce, Govt of India from June 2010 to June 2015.
He functioned as the Accountant General of Odisha at Bhubaneswar from July 2015 to April 2018.
As part of his official duty, he travelled to many European countries, South Africa, Sri Lanka, CIS & Middle east countries. He was a member of the audit inspection team to UN Organization, FAO, Rome during 2000 and 2004, UNO Headquarters at New York during March-April 2016 and UN-OCHA at Khartoum, Sudan in Feb 2020.
