History of the Office

This office came into being on 1st January 1968 after the division of Audit and Accounts functions of office of A.G Bengal.  At that time it was named as A.G. (Central) and started functioning from the Old Currency Building (1, BBD Bag).  In 1969 to accommodate its staff, the office shifted some sections to the 7th Floor of Poddar Court (18, Rabindra Sarani, Kolkata -700001).  In March 1971, Regional Audit Office was opened at Port Blair entrusting it with the work of audit and accounting of the transaction of the Central Government in ANI. In 1974 the office was renamed as Office of the Director of Audit (Central) Kolkata. The office saw an up gradation which was brought in another name change. It was renamed in March 1990 again as the Office of the Principal Director of Audit, Central, Kolkata. In 1998 Old Currency Building was declared as heritage building compelling this office to shift its entire workforce to the 8th and 9th floor of the Poddar Court Building.  The office changed its location from Poddar court to GI Press Building at 8, Kiran Shankar Roy Road, Kolkata -700001. This office has two branch Offices at Guwahati, Assam and Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Island.
