On-the-Job Training: Bridging Theory with Practice
The on-the-job training (OJT), lasting approximately eight months, serves as a vital bridge between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Officer Trainees are assigned to the offices of Accountants General across various states, where they gain hands-on experience in the functioning of audit, accounts, and entitlement offices.
Training Structure:
The OJT is divided into two key components:
- Audit Component (16 weeks): Trainees spend 16 weeks in audit offices, followed by a 2-week experience-sharing session at the Academy.
- Accounts & Entitlements Component (14 weeks): After the experience-sharing session, trainees proceed to 14 weeks of training in Accounts & Entitlement offices.
Real-World Exposure and Responsibilities
During their OJT, Officer Trainees are exposed to all divisions and levels of office operations, including administrative and personnel matters. They are entrusted with significant responsibilities, such as:
- Leading audit teams
- Acting as Branch Officers and Assistant Public Information Officers
This experience offers a comprehensive view of the office dynamics, while also providing exposure to governance processes and public administration.
Continuous Guidance and Mentorship
The Directors of the Academy serve as counsellors throughout the OJT, maintaining regular contact with the trainees to offer guidance and support whenever needed.
Practical Experience in the Field
Trainees are assigned to field audit teams, enabling them to gain practical, hands-on experience. They also participate in meetings with the executive branch and the Public Accounts Committee, deepening their understanding of governmental operations.
Holistic Understanding of Governance
The OJT offers a detailed, well-rounded understanding of the functioning of the offices of the Accountants General in the states, alongside insights into working with various wings of government. This comprehensive exposure allows trainees to appreciate the role of the department in the broader governance framework.
Experience Sharing and Collective Learning
At the end of each OJT component, trainees engage in experience-sharing sessions that foster collective learning and discussions on field challenges. These sessions provide a valuable platform for debate and reflection on key issues, enriching the trainees' learning experience.
On-the-job training is a critical phase in the development of Officer Trainees, providing them with practical experience, exposure to governance, and an opportunity for continuous personal and professional growth
