The Office of Accountant General, United Provinces (U.P.) was called Accountant General, Uttar Pradesh from 30th January 1950. This Office was restructured on line with the revised policy of the Indian Audit & Accounts Department into Audit & Accounts Wings at the State levels. Consequent upon restructuring of the IA&AD, the Office of the Accountant General (A&E), Uttar Pradesh came into existence on 1st March 1984. The office performs the accounting and entitlement functions in respect of the transactions of the State of Uttar Pradesh.

The Accountant General maintains the accounts of the State Government on the basis of inputs received from the State Treasuries. The work of the preparation of Appropriation and Finance Accounts of the State lies with the office of the Accountant General (A&E), Uttar Pradesh along with the maintenance of General Provident Fund accounts of subscribers, who are employees of the State Government. The office is also entrusted with the responsibility of maintenance of Works Accounts related to various Engineering Departments of the State (Public Works Department, Minor Irrigation and Rural Engineering Services) along with the compilation of accounts of the Forest Divisions of the Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh.
